Michael Caine Says Johnny Depp, Philip Seymour Hoffman in next Batman

As vehemently as I was opposed to the Cher playing Catwoman rumors, I am flipping head-over-heels at the idea of Johnny Depp and Philip Seymour Hoffman becoming bad guys for the next Batman film from director Christopher Nolan.

Just what evil anti-heroes will the two be playing? According to Michael Caine who spoke to MTV News, Depp will portray The Riddler, while Hoffman waddles around as The Penguin.

Are you as thrilled about this news as I am? Two of the very best actors in the business right now putting their own spin on a couple of legendary bad guys from the Batman universe. Sounds awesome.

It’s almost to the point where Christian Bale is a supporting actor in these movies now.

The comparisons will be abundant. First it was Jack Nicholson versus Heath Ledger, and now we’ll have Depp to compare to Jim Carey and Hoffman to Danny DeVito.

Of course, after what I’ve seen from Nolan, I’d bet the farm that these two new guys blow away any preceding performances for The Penguin and The Riddler.

What do you guys think? Great news?

I just want to see if Batman's voice gets any lower or gravelly. Boy I think the should make the Penguin gay, a Capotesque bad guy, creepy.

First thing: I don't believe this rumor. Nolan himself said he wasn't set on the next Batman, so I don't think Caine knows s*it.

That being said: I think casting Johnny Depp and Seymour-Hoffman in the roles of Riddler and Penguin would be a tragedy.

When Nolan did the Joker, he was disregarding the previous Batman flicks. He did the Joker because he had a clear vision for him, and a story to tell. He also cast Ledger against type, who is more of a method actor, to bring the character to life.

I firmly believe that the third Nolan Batman DOESN'T need well-known actors. Especially not Depp, who, as fun as he is to watch on the big screen, is still and will always be Johnny Depp playing the Riddler, and not the Riddler. Seymour-Hoffman is a brilliant actor, but I don't see him bringing Penguin to life as much as inhabiting the role.

What I HOPE is going on is that WB executives are being asses, and are trying to cast big names thinking the magic formula is to reinvent previous Batman characters. What I hope happens is that Nolan tells them to fuck off, and creates his unique vision, which may or may not be about previous Batman big screen villains. And then he casts someone relatively unknown but talented in the role.

I'd much rather have the kind of casting that took place in Batman Begins (Scarecrow was brilliant) than seeing Johnny Depp going into overacting to sell us a fun but meaningless Riddler.

And I'm saying that as a fan of both Depp and Seymour-Hoffman. PSH is my favorite Hollywood actor.

Not sure if they need Depp or Seymour-Hoffman, but both are world class and I'm sure would be fantastic, esp given the acting gauntlet thrown down by Heath Ledger.

Just fix Batman's voice also please.

I like both actors as well, but I agree with you. Casting unknowns, or lesser known, might be a better way to do it. I'm sure it would work either way, but I'd hate to see them get into the kind of stunt casting the other Batman movies got in to.

These two could definitely out act the previous Penguin and Riddler. Let's just see what happens, shall we?

Nolan is in charge of the script, actors he hires, story, directing, the whole show… its all rumorville… until he confirms he's doing another, and then says a script has been started…

but the penguin… no, not interested… and Jonny depp asna drunk Riddler in a accent thats hard to understand wearing a ton of eye liner with gold teeth?? no, I'll pass…

make it another villian… a relatively unknown one…penguin is un believable… riddler…. maybe but not as Depp, hes overrated…..

I hope this is half true anyway… I wish I had it recorded for proof, but I did mention to a coworker after seeing The Dark Knight that the best actor to play the Penguin would be Hoffman.

I did for real.. honestly… I think he's fantastic artistically and would kill the role… that's just my opinion

I agree that Hoffman would be awesome as the Penguin. I just don't think the character is interesting enough to warrant inclusion in the next film - with or without Hoffman.

I don't care if it's next film or in the next 3 films (wishful thinking), I just think he would be the best penguin among the current slate of well known actors

i want to see The Crock! The Crock would make for a good bad guy. something about batman having to hunt the child-eating murderous crock thru the maze-like sewers of gotham sounds damn good to me.

haha, scottys comment is so right on. Please fix batmans voice! he sounds like borderline like he is growling. But i think johnny depp will be a great riddler. Im a huge fan, be sure to check out his fansite Johnny Depp FanSite
