I’m guilty of being caught up in the hype that is the Smashing Pumpkin’s song, The Beginning is the End is the Beginning. At first I thought I was the only one completely enthralled by the song and lyrics that accompanied the first trailer for Watchmen.
I even posted a blog about the origins of the song and how Zach Snyder chose to use it on his trailer. I was sucked in.
Apparently, I wasn’t the only one. Sales on iTunes for the song jumped a mind-blowing 100,000% since the trailer was first seen. That amounts to over 11,000 downloads on iTunes, which doesn’t include 40,000+ times it’s been played on the Smashing Pumpkins‘ Myspace page.
Charlie Amter of the LA Times interviewed band frontman Billy Corgan about what the fans think of the song’s overnight success, and this was his hilarious response:
Amter: What has been Smashing Pumpkins fan reaction toward the use of the song in the trailer?
Corgan: My fans seem to be confused when the outside world appreciates our work, so I can only imagine this terrifies them.
Have you downloaded the song? Does it renew your interest in the Smashing Pumpkins?

this song is over 10 years old, and was featured in batman and robin. it in no way renews my faith in the fallen songwriter that corgan has become, and bodes poorly for snyder's adaptation of the alan moore classic.
I don't care how old it is. I love it, and the Pumpkins. It's perfect for the movie now matter how many movies it's been in.
I agree with Copa, what a great song. Some muic just fits,it certainly sounds like others appreciate as well, can’t wait Watchmen.
It is a catchy song - non-pumpkins fans will enjoy it, and move onto the next song, whilst us dedicated devotee’s will savour every last minute… over…and…over
