I forgot to grab my War Heroes copy this morning on my way out, so when I visited Atomic Comics this afternoon, I didn’t have the “ticket” needed to hop in the Mark Millar autograph line. Aaron, the comic book aficionado down there, tried to sell me a 2nd printing, variant version, but it just wasn’t worth it.
With Tom Cruise getting tremendous reviews for his short work in Tropic Thunder, he’s using the attention to announce several new projects. In fact, he’s announced three projects in just the last two weeks. The latest is an adaptation of the DC Comics/Wildstorm comic, Sleeper, which Sam Raimi is producing with an eye on Cruise for the starring role.
When I was at Comic-Con, the idea for this story entered my head but the inquires I had with DC Comics didn’t pan out, so I was unable to actually find the information I was seeking.
But as luck would have it, others saw what was happening and sought out answers I couldn’t.
While at Comic-Con, I stayed with my cousin two nights for free. I thought it would be awesome to buy him and his roommate a copy of Watchmen in order to repay them for their kindness in putting up with me. They had no copy of their own, his roomie hadn’t read it, so it was the perfect gift.
Made it to the comic book store late this week, hitting it up on Thursday instead of the usual Wednesday. It completely threw my life out of balance, but I managed to keep things on course. Somehow.
Despite my struggles, I did make it out the door with less stuff than normal. I had to tell myself that just because I see a new issue of a series, that doesn’t mean I have to go ahead and buy all the previous issues just to catch up.
We told you a few days ago that Mark Millar would be coming out with some news about Kick-Ass, the upcoming film adaptation of the graphic novel with the same name.
Well, the first part of this big news is the launch of the official website for the movie, which went live today. There isn’t anything there but a splash page but I’m sure that will change shortly.
You can enter your email address to get updates on what’s happening with the movie, the first I assume will be the notification that the site is actually more than just the title of the movie and “coming soon.”
Virgin Comics sent us the first issue of Blade of Warrior: Kshatriya, a brand new comic book from writer Arjun Gaind and artist R. Manikandan, and here is a review and a short preview of the first five pages.
The basic plot of the comic covers the history of an ancient Indian kingdom where a young boy is crowned as the next king, but his jealous older brother will have none of it and proceeds to make a deal with an evil spirit to help take back what he feels is rightfully his.
One of the highlight of Comic Con for me was discovering the comic book series The Black Coat, created by Ben Lichius and Francesco Francavilla. It’s a swashbuckling tale of a Zorro-like hero during The American Revolution period of the United States history, with a hefty dose of monsters and creepy villains thrown in for good measure.
If you enjoy history, and also love comic book superheroes, it’s a great series. The writing and historical aspects of it are fantastic, and the artwork (mostly black and white) seems to jump out at you from the pages.
War-Heroes is an interesting series so far and I’m looking forward to #2 sometime this month. Mark Millar is the writer and Tony Harris does the art for this soldier-superhero comic book adventure.
I reviewed the first issue last month, and you can read it here to get a good idea of what War-Heroes is all about.
But even as we’re still waiting for #2, Millar and Harris posted the sketch for #3’s cover on their forum and it’s pretty crazy looking.
First Stephen King adapted his Dark Towers series into a comic book and now comes The Stand, considered by some to be his greatest work ever.
IGN posted a preview of the first few pages of The Stand: Captain Trips #1, which comes out at midnight on September 1st. The writing is being done by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Secret Invasion: Fantastic Four, Angel Revelations), and the artwork is drawn by Mike Perkins (Captain America, House of M: Avengers). It’s published by Marvel
It’s not like I’m a big fan of Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog, but he did make a trip all the way to San Diego a week and a half ago for Comic-Con and the resulting video was pretty friggin’ hilarious.
He basically trashes everyone and everything there and it couldn’t be funnier.
MySpace Dark Horse Presents published their latest issue this month and inside of it was a tasty treat in the form of a new Serenity short comic book story called The Other Half.
It’s written by Jim Krueger and the art is by Will Conrad, who apparently only had a week to do the illustrations. He’s been the guy behind the art on all the Serenity comics so far.
So last week I started a little series where I tell you guys the comic books that I get on my pull list, and offer to review any of them if someone asks. Well, none of you asked for reviews, but I’ll tell you that the Batman/Superman #50 stretched the two superheroes relationship to new heights (or lows depending on who you are).
Sometimes there is just too much news and stuff going on in the world of pop culture, and while we’re awesome, we cannot cover absolutely everything. So from time to time, you’re going to get a wealth of links for your exploratory purposes, published around mid-day.
Somehow I missed out on snatching up the preview edition of the new Fringe comic book while I was at Comic-Con, but thanks to the guys at FringeTelevision.com, we have the first six-page issue right here for your enjoyment.
Now don’t laugh: This IS a prequel copy to the upcoming six-issue comic book series that is also a prequel to the television series.
