The Pop Critics “Dark Knight” viewing party in Phoenix

Calling it a party might be a stretch, but I suppose if someone brought a few beers and a deck of cards, at least it might constitute a fun gathering.

The Dark Knight IMAX Experience is playing at the Deer Valley 30 in North Phoenix, and a few of us from Pop Critics will be there for the 3:15 AM showing this Friday morning.

Reminder: Pop Critics Forums

I wrote about this in the site update post last week, but I just wanted to remind you again. With Disqus as our new commenting system, we also essentially have a forum in which we can all talk about other topics that Jason, Richard or myself may not write about too often.

Site update and news

We’re constantly trying to improve things here at Pop Critics, be it speeding things up, adding new features or getting more writers.

Sometimes they are small changes, sometimes they are massive - like adding Disqus commenting. But whatever we do, it’s to try and make this place better and a lot more fun.

Top ‘Critics’ for June 2008

June was an interesting month around these parts. We’ve had some insane traffic as of late and a boost in our readership, including a bunch of new commentors.

We also switched to Disqus part of the way through the month, and that was a huge undertaking which has turned out pretty good I think.

Stumble Madness!

Some of you may know about the site StumbleUpon.com. What they do is give you a toolbar that allows you to randomly “stumble” across cool websites that other stumblers have liked or given a “thumbs up.”

If you are ever bored and looking for a new website or cool video or picture, give Stumble Upon a shot.

New Pop Critics “Upcoming Events” calendar

I wanted to write a quick blurb about a new feature here at Pop Critics that we hope gets some use out of you guys and serves as a helpful reminder for your entertainment needs.

We’ve added a new Upcoming Events Calendar to the site, straight from a Google shared system. We’ll be adding dates of things that we think are important for you to remember and keeping it as updated as humanly possible.

Welcome to Disqus commenting!

Okay, this is the official post with the new commenting system from Disqus enabled. We told you guys that we were going to test Disqus out this coming week, and it’s time to get the trial run started!

If you want to know more about it, read our post and go sign-up if you want, but otherwise, try to comment a bit below and tell us what you think!

Pop Critics to give Disqus a shot

As I’ve mentioned many, many times, the fun we have here is interacting with all you guys. If we didn’t get feedback, discussions or opinions on stuff we post about, we’d likely give up, because Jason and I can really only take so much of talking to each other.

That being the case, we’ve been impressed with the guys over at Disqus and what they do for blogging communities.

Top ‘Critics’ for May 2008

So last month was an aberration, an anomaly on the road of life. We had two people with over 300 comments, one of them sitting at 533!
That of course was Cap’n Schwartz, otherwise known as “The Cap’n” around these parts. Would he repeat again?
Yes, he would, despite some serious competition from Scotty Dub, who was [...]

Welcome to the new host!

If you can read this post on our site, then you’ve made it to our new host! Congrats, give yourself a pat on the back!

Hopefully our little problems will be a thing of the past and we’ll have a nice, long period of blissful web server hosting.

The DNS changed on Monday night around 5pm PST, so it SHOULD be pretty good and propagated by Tuesday morning. If not, you might want to think about a new ISP. *grin*

Thanks for bearing with us during the last few days!

Mike

Site problems again

Jason and I wanted to apologize briefly this morning for the sluggish nature of the site today. We’re experiencing some increased traffic, but also just realizing we need a more powerful server to host PopCritics.com.
So this week we’ll be moving to a new host, maybe even as soon as tonight if I can get my [...]

Pop Critics suffers some hiccups, but we’re still ticking!

Early Friday morning our site was moved to a new host that is better, with more memory and an updated operating system.

However, in the process, we suffered a slight snafu when one of our DB tables got corrupted during the transfer. It took most of the day to figure out the problem, but once we did, the site was back up and running just in time for Battlestar Galactica to air and the recap to be posted. *grin*

Pop Critics Looking For Writers

Pop Critics is actively looking for more talented and enthusiastic writers who can tackle some of the things we’re not already covering, or perhaps contribute new points of view to television shows or subjects we are already covering.

Pop Critics gets Facebooked and Twitterized

One of our main focuses here at Pop Critics is the community. We always look at ways to involve you guys, because it just makes it that much more fun for all of us. Avatars, Ultimate Bad Ass…those are just awesome ways for all of us to get to know each other and grow as a little community of pop culture critics.

The winner of the Pop Critics avatar contest!

We announced a few weeks ago that Pop Critics switched to Gravatars for our little avatar displays next to your name, and we told you how to get your own.

Along with that we also said we’d do a little contest in which Jason and myself would choose our favorite avatar from the ones you guys decided to go with.
